PYT Plays - Updated Fall 2021

PYT Needs Help Tues., Dec. 7th / Wed., Dec. 8th

Preparing PaperHand Puppet Gym/Studio  for "High School Musical" Performances

Pittsboro Youth Theater needs a few capable volunteers to work at PaperHand's facility on Tuesday, Dec. 7th or Wednesday the 8th from 5 'til 8pm to help move puppets, clean up the old gym floor, and generally spruce up the fantastic place for our shows next weekend. It'll be something volunteers will never forget–not the kind of thing a person does everyday! If you're interested in helping fix up PaperHand's gym/studio for PYT's "High School Musical" performances, please send an email to CFTA.Cwitter1@gmail.com; be sure to mention if you're available Tuesday, Dec. 7th or Wednesday, Dec.8th from 5pm-8pm in your email.

Disney Channel's smash hit movie musical "High School Musical" comes to life on stage. Gabriella and the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends and family while balancing their classes and extra curricular activities.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical Jr., a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.  Although Horton faces ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.  Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Sir Gawain, needing to prove his bravery, accepts the challenge.  The trial begins with the knight getting to strike the monstrous Green Knight three times, blows that the Green Knight will return in a year’s time.  During the year, Sir Gawain successfully completes the tests of honesty and loyalty in comic style, but the hapless knight still must meet the Green Knight again with hopes of winning the hand of Lady Elaine, saving Camelot, and upholding the reputation of the Knights of the Round Table.

Wont Be Pittsboro Youth Theater's first time at

the Theater During COVID Rodeo.

If worse comes to worst, Pittsboro Youth Theater has the chops to quickly switch up our rehearsals and performances.  Read Article 1, 2, 3.

Check out the virtual performances of past casts on our YouTube channel. Subscribe while you're there; new episodes are being added all the time.

What if COVID Worsens?

In 2020 and 2021 PYT learned how to produce award-winning theater with increased ventilation, social distancing, masks, going outside and, if need be, online. When in the theater every cast and staff member is required to social distance and wear a mask 100% of the time. Increased ventilation has been proven to mitigate indoor COVID risk. So we always keep doors and windows at the ends of our building ajar with a fan blowing air out our middle room.

If being indoors is deemed too dangerous this season, we can rehearse outdoors as much as possible, and if need be due to cold and dark conditions, we can rehearse online until the situation improves or it's show time. PYT shows always go on one way or another. In October 2020 we performed the musical "Heal 2020" drive-in movie style.

How does virtual theater work?

When need be virtual casts will rehearse together with their Director on Zoom. If COVID gets too nasty at show time, PYT will provide props and costumes and train up the cast to perform their play on ZOOM. This works better for some plays than others, but it's nice to know that in a pinch virtual rehearsals and performances are doable. Videos of online performances stay on our YouTube channel for family, friends and the public to watch after the performance.

PYTs Technical Director and Co-founder, Craig Witter, raises the level of all our virtual theater video programs. Mr. Craig is a national award winning videographer with decades of professional video production skills, experience and equipment.

SPRING 2021 COVID-RELATED CHANGES

Safely continuing Pittsboro Youth Theater (PYT) operations during COVID requires flexibility. As of Dec. 1, 2020, we expect that there will be sufficient COVID vaccinations received by our casts and crew to conduct mandatory in-person rehearsals and performances sometime in Spring 2021. PYT will consider cast member families' wishes before decisions are made.

Rehearsals

PYT currently plans for our Spring 2021 plays to begin with online rehearsals. When PYT determines it is safe and warm enough for in-person rehearsals with masks and social distancing, mandatory in-person outdoor rehearsals will be conducted starting with Saturday rehearsals. When PYT determines with input from cast member families that in-person rehearsals will begin, those rehearsals will be mandatory for all cast members affected. Any special variance from this must be approved in advance by Tammy Matthews,  PYT Artistic Director.

Performances

All Spring 2021 plays will have live performances, in-person on-stage, if possible, possibly outdoors. If in-person on-stage performances are deemed by us with parent input to be too risky, then some or some casts will perform live online. "Descendants" musical will be performed live on-stage inside if possible, outside if necessary. All live-online performances will be able to be viewed live by performer families and probably the general public.

Performance specifics will be determined as early as possible; we'll all have a better idea through spring.

Pittsboro Youth Theater (PYT) has established and will enforce the following COVID-19 Rules. We consider this our responsibility in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

When PYT determines with input from cast member families that in-person rehearsals will begin, those rehearsals will be mandatory for all cast members affected.

Until COVID-19 regulations are eased, all in-person cast member rehearsals and performances will be conducted according to the following:

OUTSIDE - All in-person cast activities will be outside, weather permitting, or be cancelled.

SOCIAL DISTANCING - Cast members must stay 6-feet away from others not in their immediate household during the entire time they are at or near the PYT activity. This includes before, during and after official PYT activities.

MASKSCast members must wear a mask over their mouth and nose at all times at or near the location of the PYT activity. This includes before, during and after official PYT activities. One exception to this mask rule is that the cast members of "Heal 2020" may remove their mask while actively speaking or singing during performances.

VACCINE - Once a COVID vaccine which is certified "safe and effective" becomes available to us, the PYT crew, we will get vaccinated. This will support our goal of safely rehearsing and performing plays on stage in Sweet Bee Theater. We highly encourage cast members and their families to do the same. In this way we can all enjoy live performance theater the way it was supposed to be performed. Whoo Hooo!!!
