Sleeping Beauty

Briar Rose:  Tale of Sleeping Beauty

Based on the Brothers Grimm story

Adapted by  Stephen Hotchner

PYT's elementary school cast had a great time producing Wizard of Oz by the same author in Spring 2016. Like Hotchner's Wizard script, this Sleeping Beauty play also has lots of audience interaction, kid's humor and action that'll keep the little ones interested and having fun.

This clever and charming adaptation of the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty is a wild, comic romp.  Despite warnings from her hysterical, hyper mother, Briar Rose touches the thorns of some roses given to her by that devious thirteenth fairy.  Consequently, she and the rest of the royal family fall asleep for 100 years under the evil fairy’s curse.  A hilarious parade of doomed princes fail again and again in the hissing, growling briar bushes (created by children from the audience) that protect the palace where the royal family sleeps.  All these royal efforts are futile until a prince shows up with his side-splittingly funny bodyguard, the two-headed troll (played by two actors standing back-to-back). It’s ’back-to-back’ nonsense as the two heads drive the prince mad by finishing each other’s (and his) sentences, encouraging him to kiss Briar Rose.  Did we forget to mention this prince has a serious kissing phobia?!  You’ll love the clever dialogue, comical characters, lively stage action, great participation, and surprise twist.

DON'T MISS JUNGALBOOK!

A FEW TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR - COME EARLY!!!!

Jungalbook

Based on Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories

Adapted by Edward Mast

We're looking forward to producing Jungalbook again! This is an excellent script which PYT had the good fortune to choose as our very first production back in 2013. The cast and audience of that play still tell stories about what a terrific experience it was.

This dramatization is set in the the jungle of india. The dialogue and action refer to the jungle, but the play draws color and style from a child's intense world of playfulness, loyalty, adventure and betrayal. Mowgli, the human child, grows up in the jungle raised by wolves under the guidance of Baloo the bear. The tiger, Sherakhan, killed his parents and wants the boy's flesh, but Bagheera, the lone pnather, protects him. Mowgli grows up wild and unconcerned, believing he's a wolf; but the tiger works long and hard to poison the wolf pack against him. With rope stolen from the human village, Mowgli meets and destroys Sherakhan; but his use of "manthing" has broken jungle law. Mowgli must choose whether to defy the law or leave the jungle forever.

Glass Menagerie

 by Tennessee Williams

This is PYT's first drama for adult audiences. Tammy Matthews, PYT Artistic Director is thrilled that her core cast for many years has gained the maturity, acting skill and on-stage experience to perform this classsic American drama.

The Glass Menagerie was Tennessee Williams's first successful play; he went on to become one of America's most highly regarded playwrights.

In Glass Menagerie Amanda Wingfield and her two grown children, Tom and Laura, live together in a shabby St. Louis apartment during the Depression. As he dreams of being a writer, Tom supports the family by working in a warehouse he detests. Uneducated and unskilled, Amanda depends entirely on Tom for the family’s livelihood. She fears he will abandon her and Laura, just as her husband left them, a possibility made even more frightening since Laura is disabled. When Tom mentions Jim O’Connor, a young man he works with at the warehouse, Amanda insists he invite Jim to dinner. She thinks of Jim as Laura’s “gentleman caller” and imagines a secure future for Laura as Jim’s wife. When Jim comes to dinner, the shy, introverted Laura is terrified, as she had known and admired him in high school. Jim remembers Laura fondly. As they reminisce, Jim is attracted by Laura’s gentleness and beauty and kisses her. Laura is shattered when Jim apologizes for the kiss, explaining that he is engaged. Her dreams for Laura’s future destroyed, Amanda vents her fury at Tom. Tom leaves to pursue his own dreams but discovers he can’t escape the past.

Be careful what you wish for as Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale comes to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical. Into the Woods JR. features all of your favorite characters – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables.

The musical centers on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever. With unforgettable roles, minimal dancing and no chorus, Into the Woods JR. showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it more accessible to young performers.

Set deep in the Tombigbee swamp, this classic tale of a very young boy with a very big fear is brought to new and vibrant life in this version of Wiley and the Hairy Man. The story centers around a fatherless young boy, his conjure-woman mother, his faithful dog and the Hairy Man who haunts Wiley's days and dreams. An collection of swamp creatures creates various locations in sound and movement as Wiley sets forth alone to face his fears and to conquer his own lack of self-confidence. The magic of this play is not fairy dust—it is soil, the magic of survival, the magic of the earth and mud of the swamp.

Description: "Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures"

Summer has come to a crashing halt in the little town of Watertower. The kids don't want to be back in school; they are listless and bored. Suddenly, the classroom door bursts open and there, wearing pajamas and cowboy boots, stands red-headed Gooney Bird Greene! "Hi! My name is Gooney Bird Greene—that's like the color with a silent 'e' on the end and I like to be smack in the middle of everything!" The class is never the same again. Gooney Bird speaks with confidence and dresses in outrageous outfits including Capri pants, blue knee socks, high-topped basketball sneakers, and elbow-length black gloves. But most wondrous of all, she casts herself as the hero in the most improbable, outlandish stories: how she arrived from China on a flying carpet, how she got a lovely pair of diamond earrings at the local palace, how she directed a symphony orchestra while driving through the center of town, and how her beloved cat, Catman, was consumed by a cow! Are these stories really true? Of course they are because, as Gooney Bird proudly proclaims, she only tells "absolutely true stories!" In blending funny and memorable characters with colorful details and her distinctive flair for suspense, Gooney Bird awakens the students' dormant imaginations. They come to realize their lives are as unique as Gooney Bird's and that they, too, can cast themselves as the heroes in their own true tales of discovery and adventure.

Every cast member must complete an online application; hard copies of applications will not be accepted. Complete the Cast Member Application at the bottom of this page. Note that the first monthly cast fee must be paid when the application is submitted.
